What Happened To Social Media Monday?

What Happened To Social Media Monday?

It’s now Social Media First Friday. We’ll be meeting today at the Annex at noon, and every following First Friday of each month until further notice.

Topic for today might be Social Media Strategy. We talked about formal strategies and written plans earlier in the year, and as our reach grows (millions of followers of Penn State’s collective efforts) and our needs more profound (budget cuts), the need for predetermined goals and the metrics to prove success or failure becomes essential. Such a formal plan, and therefore this discussion, may also include Penn State and College or Unit level Guidelines, Best Practices or Policy.

The Penn State Chapter of the Social Media Club Facebook Page (http://www.facebook.com/psusmc) is a resource that we Penn State Social Media Pros and Enthusiasts use to stay in touch, relay useful links and invites to various events and such. We also sometimes use the hashtag #psusmff (formerly #psusmm) to query or communicate with the group.

As always during Social Media First Friday, our topics and plans are malleable (but not too much so) and we remain open to your interests and desires. We’ll start with your questions, concerns and curiosities no matter what they may be.

Please circulate this week’s invitation to anyone you think might be interested in spirited social media conversations with actionable substance. View the archives and continue the conversation at the Social Media First Friday Blog .

Social Media Monday – May 9, Noon @ The Annex – The Future

05/09/2011
Noon to 1 pm
The Annex – 1 College Ave * (see below)

SMM: The Future

Ch..Ch..Ch..Ch.. Changes.

Today’s Social Media Monday will be centered around the future of SMM. Maintaining a weekly schedule has proved impossible this Spring, so moving to a monthly schedule is one of the likely changes. The desires and goals remain largely the same, we believe it is as important and helpful as ever for the various Social Media practitioners and enthusiasts here at Penn State stay connected and share knowledge and experiences.

The PS Social Media Club may play a key roll in that future, and we would encourage you to come on down to the Annex at Noon today to put your 2 cents in and to continue this conversation on the PS Social Media Club’s Facebook Page here: http://www.facebook.com/psusmc

Social Media Monday for April 11 @ The Annex

04/11/2011
Noon to 1 pm
The Annex – 1 College Ave * (see below)

Bring your questions and goals, we’ll open this one up wide for what’s in your world these days.

I wouldn’t mind spending a little time talking about the process of starting a Facebook Page to replace an existing Facebook Group. We have a group that, by all accounts, is pretty successful. We have over 1500 members and engagement is good. There is some valid desire to convert it to a page, and to put it plainly, we’re a little scared. Add to that the recent Profile-to-Page debacle, and we’re uneasy from all angles. Let’s discuss.

Other topics could include: Facebook Questions, Twitter branded profile pages, New Twitter Search, Social Media Day…

As always during Social Media Mondays, our topics and plans are malleable (but not too much so) and we remain open to your interests and desires. We’ll start with your questions, concerns and curiosities no matter what they may be.

Social Media Monday for 3/27 – Social Media Plugins & Analytics

03/27/2011
Noon to 1 pm
Penn State Center For Sustainability – 309 Sackett Building

SMM: Social Media Plugins on your Web Site & Social Media Analytics

Perhaps we can discuss the interplay of our Social Media pages and our existing Web sites. What IS the best way to have them work together in harmony. Facebook recently changed the way they handle a ‘Like’, further blurring the lines between ‘Liking’ and ‘Sharing’. What are the best methods and philosophies of putting Facebook Social Plugins, Twitter icons etc on your Web site?

Facebook has also released a real-time analytics package that extends their insights to your Web site. It is essentially tracking the ‘Like’ buttons on sites outside of Facebook and what happens to your content that is shared. The viral process in charts and graphs.

As always during Social Media Mondays, our topics and plans are malleable (but not too much so) and we remain open to your interests and desires. We’ll start with your questions, concerns and curiosities no matter what they may be.

Social Media Monday for March 7 – New Location: Center For Sustainability

03/07/2011
Noon to 1 pm
Penn State Center For Sustainability – 309 Sackett Building

SMM: Open Talk

US Gov. Software Creates ‘Fake People’ on Social Networks:  http://www.examiner.com/social-media-in-national/us-gov-software-creates-fake-people-on-social-networks-to-promote-propoganda. Industry stats say that no fewer than 1 in 10 Social Media profiles are fake.

Perhaps the broader conversation is of people misrepresenting themselves on our social media outlets. Jenna reports 2 instances in admissions where people posted on our Facebook page saying that they got in, but when we looked up their applications, we saw that they really hadn’t.

We’ve been talking about videos lately, and Penn State released The Partnership (http://thepartnership.psu.edu) last week. A great video, although over 9 minutes long. Some recent research indicates that by the end of the second minute of online video, you’ve lost half your audience. http://wistia.com/blog/4-ways-to-keep-viewers-engaged-in-an-online-video/

Social Media Monday for Feb 28 – Topics Grab Bag

02/28/2011

SMM: Open Talk

We will be in the Media Room of the All-Sports Museum for the last time today. Here’s a map of where to enter and where to park: http://grfx.cstv.com/schools/psu/graphics/museum/museum-map.jpg

No topics jumped out this week as critical, so let’s leave it a little open today.

How about:
