Social Media Monday for Feb 21 – A Little of Everything

02/21/2011
Noon to 1 pm
Penn State All-Sports Museum – Beaver Stadium

SMM: New Facebook Pages, YouTube Closed Captioning, and Twitter Complaints

We will be in the Media Room of the All-Sports Museum again. Here’s a map of where to enter and where to park: http://grfx.cstv.com/schools/psu/graphics/museum/museum-map.jpg

We’ve spent over a week now with the new Facebook Page, I think there is room for discussion as to how it’s working out.

Penn State’s AD-25 policy on accessibility is now saying that anything we upload is to be closed captioned. We could spend some time looking at the Closed Captioning system built into YouTube.

Lastly, we could spend some time on some general best practices in dealing with complaints and tense situations online.

As always during Social Media Mondays, our topics and plans are malleable (but not too much so) and we remain open to your interests and desires. We’ll start with your questions, concerns and curiosities no matter what they may be.

Please circulate this week’s invitation to anyone you think might be interested in spirited social media conversations with actionable substance. View the archives and continue the conversation at the Social Media Monday Blog.

Social Media Monday for Feb 14 – New Facebook Pages

SMM: New Facebook Pages

Facebook has made some significant changes to it’s “Pages”, which we all seem to have and work with. The upgrade will become automatic on March 10 so let’s spend some time talking about those changes, some quirks that arise, and how these changes may effect our strategies for managing a Facebook Page.

Also, perhaps we will join in the efforts of http://www.worldsoundhealingday.org/ and make the “AH” sound for 5 minutes at noon, which is said to “create and project energy of compassion and love, sending a sonic valentine to Gaia, our Mother Earth… [and] …Global Harmonization leads to planetary peace and healing.” So we got that going for us. (thanks @colehons)

Social Media Monday for Feb 7 – Social Media Ads

02/07/2011
Noon to 1 pm
Penn State All-Sports Museum – Beaver Stadium
SMM: Social Media Ads

Firstly, please note the new location. We’ll be meeting on the 50 yard line of Beaver Stadium… OK, no we won’t. But we will be in the Media Room (aka the place where the post football game press conferences are held). I’ll assume you can find Beaver Stadium but here’s a map of where to enter and where to park: http://grfx.cstv.com/schools/psu/graphics/museum/museum-map.jpg

Based on a conversation that came up this week, the group expressed an interest in advertising on Social Media sites. A couple of us are actively engaged in this and can talk about our experiences and show analytics and other real numbers about cost and results.

Also, if you missed @AimsterB‘s tweet a couple weeks ago, HyperAlerts has proven to be an amazing tool. Hyped as the feature that Facebook forgot, the site explains:

You can add alerts in two ways. Either click ‘Add alert by URL’ and just type in the URL for the Facebook page you’d like to monitor, or you can select from a list of pages you administer. You can add as many alerts as you like, and even multiple alerts for the same page. Maybe you want an alert immediately, as well as a weekly report of all activity. The ‘Own content’ checkbox means comments and posts by the page administrators. You will only get alerts on posts newer than one month.

Social Media Monday for Jan 31, 2011 – Goals and Guests

01/31/2011
Noon to 1 pm
The Annex – 1 College Ave * (see below)

SMM: Goals and Guests

We got maybe half way around the room last week, sharing our goals, and had a great conversation going. It would be a great one to continue.

We also talked last week about inviting certain folks to speak with us at future meetings; notable faculty, local business owners, student groups, traveling salesmen… hobos, and the like. Let’s follow up on that and see if we can book some dates.

This is our last Monday in the Annex, and if you haven’t seen it yet, here’s your chance. I think it looks like the set of CSI Miami.

We also have a guest coming who works with Bridge of Hope of Centre County, a group that works to better the situations of single mothers. I invited Dana to come by and query our group for some Social Media advice.

* The Annex: Cynde says: The actual address is 1 College Ave Annex there is no room number, we are all open down there.  The office is located downtown underneath Mr. Charles. There is a door beside Mr. Charles that is under a Penn State sign that says 1 college ave annex on it.  You can also enter through the back door on Calder Way across from the India Pavillion.  Not sure that entrance is labeled well. Contact me 5-9420 if they need directions.

Social Media Monday for Jan 24: Goals and Tools

01/24/2011
Noon to 1 pm
The Annex – 1 College Ave * (see below)

SMM: Goals and Tools

We didn’t get to it last week, but I think it would be great to go around the room and discuss what goals we each have for the year ahead. Goals are an important part of any campaign, after all, how do we know we’re doing a good job if we don’t know where we’re going? Perhaps we can help each other hash out some reasonable expectations for 2011.

We left off last week talking about tools for efficiency and organization, and there is plenty of subject matter for that to continue, it’s a big topic. We covered Tweetdeck in December and Yahoo Pipes, RSS and Feedburner last week. What tricks do you use to stay on top?

Social Media Monday for Jan 17, 2011 @ The Annex

SMM: Happy New Year

Happy New Year gang. We’re back in action with Social Media Mondays.

Thought we’d get together without any firm agenda and see what we have as our goals for 2011. Goals are an important part of any campaign, after all, how do we know we’re doing a good job if we don’t know where we’re going? Perhaps we can help each other hash out some reasonable expectations for our year ahead.

Social Media Monday for Dec. 13: Tweetdeck and other Time Saving Social Media Tools

12/13/2010
Noon to 1 pm
The Business Building (Park and Shortlidge)
(back in) Room 214

SMM: Tweetdeck and other Time Saving Tools

We’re planning to make a much stronger effort to stay on topic these days, so come on out and see if we are able.

Social Media, for most of us, is one of many things that we do. Having the time to be great at it is hard to come by. Let’s share ideas and tools that helps us interact with Social Media in efficient ways. Tweetdeck, Google Alerts, backtype.com, Twitterfeed, RSS Graffiti, etc. Tools to listen, tools to talk and everything in between.

As always during Social Media Mondays, our topics and plans are malleable (but not too much so) and we remain open to your interests and desires. We’ll start with your questions, concerns and curiosities no matter what they may be.
